About Me
Courtney Slocum
B.M. Music Education
M.M. Music Therapy
I graduated in 2004 from UNC Greensboro with a BM in Music Education and a minor in classical voice. I have a grades K-12 North Carolina teaching license. I continued my education by attending East Carolina University to attain a master’s degree in Music Therapy and a minor in classical voice.
I have completed Montessori Training for the North American Montessori Center and am a Certified Montessori Educator. In addition to having a master’s degree, I am Board Certified in Music Therapy, and certified as an Infant Toddler Family Specialist (ITFS).
After earning my master’s degree, I taught elementary music at a private school in Wilmington, NC. I also worked as a music therapist in pediatrics at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC. For the last 9 years, I worked as a Developmental Music Therapist in the Triangle area, helping children ages birth to 21.
I have been playing piano for over 30 years and singing since grade school. I have been teaching private voice and piano lessons for 14 years. I believe that everyone can relate to and benefit from music’s therapeutic aspects. I have a broad range of experience with children of all ages and levels of functioning. I love sharing my passion for music with others. In my spare time, I love participating in local music theatre, singing in my band, and spending time with loved ones, my husband, and two little boys.
Testimonials
"In the fall of 2013 I agreed to sing for a friend's wedding. While I loved Karaoke, I had not had any professional voice training and I knew I needed some coaching if I was going to do my best. Courtney took me under her wing, and over time my vocal range as well as my self-confidence has more than doubled. Courtney's teaching style is engaging and compassionate as she tailors each lesson to help her students meet their personal goals."

"Courtney has been working with my daughter for more than two years in voice and piano.
Her instruction is phenomenal and she is able to easily relate to kids. She is truly a skilled instructor. My daughter has thrived under Courtney’s teaching, which is demonstrated
by her progress. Each week builds on the previous week in a manageable way.
Courtney is able to motivate and teach while keeping things fun for my daughter.
I highly recommend Courtney for either voice or piano lessons (or both!)."

"We met Courtney when my teenage son (with no vocal experience) wanted to audition for a part in a musical. Courtney started from scratch and helped him find his voice and build his confidence. She demonstrated a true joy for teaching and was quickly invested in his success! She is a talented, nurturing teacher and mentor!"

"Courtney fostered a beautiful bond with our family, originally as our daugher's
Developmental Music Therapist. She helped our nonverbal daughter learn to sing her first words and later remember pre-k concepts through music. Our family is thrilled to now be working with Courtney as a piano teacher for two of our children (one is still developmentally delayed).
She is doing a phenomenal job working with each of them at completely different levels.
Courtney is a teacher you and your child will never forget, and a stellar musician."
